What happens at Starta?

What happens at Starta stays at Starta! Just kidding. Here’s the real deal: we partner with founders right from the start, guiding them through the process of adapting to and entering the Canadian market successfully. In addition, we facilitate connections with other investors, and we invest in the top-performing startups at the conclusion of the program.

What does Starta do for you?

Our Accelerator program is tailored for startups with international backgrounds looking to expand into the Canadian market. We seek startups that have a strong technological focus across various sectors and the potential for a global product. Most applicants typically have a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and demonstrated traction in their home country.

The program lasts for 3 months, with an additional 3 months of follow-up strategic support. It is designed to assist startups in establishing operations in Canada while progressing toward revenue generation and fundraising.

We host two cohorts each year, each consisting of 10-15 startups. Participants will work closely with our partners and mentors and gain access to our extensive network of investors. Our exceptional mentors specialize in enhancing each startup's communication, business development, sales, marketing, and fundraising efforts, offering both strategic and tactical guidance tailored to the Canadian business landscape.

The Accelerator Program features flexible terms for companies at pre-seed, seed, and early growth stages, with an advisory fee ranging from 2-6%, depending on the company's stage. Participants will begin with 6 weeks of online sessions, both group and individual, followed by a requirement to attend the 6-week in-person portion of the program.

What sets Starta apart is our proven expertise in facilitating the transition of international startups to the Canadian market. We address everything from the biggest challenges to the smallest details, which is our core strength. Additionally, our vast network of established business connections, which our Partners have cultivated over many years, is a key asset. We treat our startups like family, both during and after the program.

Be aware that our Accelerator is an intense program that demands a strong commitment from participants—but the rewards can be substantial. To date, more than 150 startups have completed our program and have collectively raised over $75M.

Can I receive additional funding after the program?

Our new program format is specifically designed to identify and support companies for Starta’s new $50M Fund, which aims to invest in 10-15 companies annually. The fund offers investments ranging from $200k to $1M to the top-performing participants and provides additional support in co-investment deals. Companies are selected based on product-market fit and investment potential.

Should I apply?

Is Canada your next target market? Can your product scale globally? Do you have a working MVP and some traction in your home market? Is your team strong and committed? What industry sectors do you work with?

We are sector-agnostic and work with tech companies across various industries.

Are you looking for companies at a particular stage?

Our Launchpad Program welcomes companies at any stage, even those at the idea or prototype stage.

The Accelerator Program has no strict stage requirements, but most of the companies we accept already have an MVP and some traction in their home countries. However, we won’t turn down a company at an earlier stage if we fall in love with the idea and see a strong, committed team.

Our Advisory Program focuses on early-growth stage companies with consistent revenue and an established business model.

How do I apply?

Fill out your application form here. The more information you provide, the better your chances of being contacted for an interview. Don’t worry — you can always edit your application and update your responses if needed.

How do I know if my startup is accepted?

We typically start reaching out about two weeks before the application process closes. We’ll contact you via email and schedule 2-3 calls with different team members. Afterwards, you’ll receive an email with our feedback, and if you’re a good fit, an invitation to join our Program.

You never contacted me. Why?

There could be many reasons, so please don’t take it personally. Your application might not have been fully completed or may not have provided enough information. We receive hundreds of applications, and there are physical limitations on how many interviews we can conduct.

Can we apply more than once? Can we apply for the next batch?

Yes! You can submit only one application per startup per program, but you can definitely re-apply for the next batch. It’s not uncommon for us to pass on a project because it's at an early stage, but we’re happy to reconsider it for our next batch if we see potential. Several of our portfolio companies applied multiple times, received feedback, improved, and were eventually accepted into the Program.

Can I submit two startups?

Yes! But keep in mind that we expect full commitment from founders for each project. It’s rare for a founder to successfully manage two startups simultaneously.

We've already raised funding; can we still apply?

Yes.

If we participated in another accelerator, can we still apply?

Yes.

Will we need to relocate to Canada?

Yes, we require that you incorporate the company in Canada after being accepted into the program. We can assist with the incorporation process if needed.

Do you require a certain number of founders? How many people can come?

We are happy to host one or multiple representatives of your company in Canada. However, in our experience, two founders is the ideal number.

Will you pay for travel expenses?

No, we do not cover any travel-related expenses.

I’ve never been to Canada before. Is that okay?

That’s perfectly fine. In fact, about 70 percent of our founders have never been to Canada before joining Starta. During the Program, we’ll do our best to help you with relocation and ensure a smooth transition.

How good does my English have to be?

We expect you to be able to communicate, pitch, and participate in Q&As about your product in English. Don’t worry if your English isn’t perfect yet—once you immerse yourself in an English-speaking environment, you’ll improve quickly. Most people do. We also offer communication classes as part of the program.

Do you sign NDAs?

Like most VC firms, we review too many ideas to sign NDAs. However, we are committed to respecting the confidentiality of the information you submit during the application process and will not share it outside the Starta Ventures team. Once you join our program, we will sign a contract that includes a confidentiality clause.
